Effects of metallothionein on nervous system and neurological diseases

چکیده
Many experimental data show that metallothionein (MT), which is a metal-binding protein, has a close relation with neuroprotection and neurological diseases in mammals. This study aims to clarify the effect of metallothionein on nervous system and neurological diseases. Random control trials that investigated the association of metallothionein and neurological diseases were included in the review by researching MEDLINE, EMBASE and PubMed up to April 2013. Although single αand β-domain all have important function of neuroprotection, each of them is indispensable in conducting its bioactivity. Many experiments showed that some drugs/compounds exert neuron protective effects mainly via upregulation of MT. Regardless of the endogenous or exogenous MT, they all have the function of neuroprotective in rats after spinal cord injury. MT has a high potential for the neuroprotection and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as diabetic neuropathy, alzheimer’s disease, parkinson’s disease, huntington’s disease, cerebral ischemia, and muscle function owing to its various functions including anti-oxidant properties and modulators not only for Zn but for Cu in the extraand intracellular spaces.

An Overview of the Effects of Melatonin on Nervous System Diseases
Introduction: Melatonin is a hormone secreted from the pineal gland and plays an important role in regulating the brain functions. This hormone with antioxidant activity supports the body against internal and external damaging factors. Melatonin reduces the production of free radicals by preserving mitochondrial homeostasis, and contributes to ATP synthesis in mitochondria. Reduction of melaton...
متن کاملIonotropic Glutamate Receptors and their Role in Neurological Diseases
Glutamate is extensively and relatively uniformly distributed in the central nervous system (CNS) and its effects mediated by two distinct groups of receptors including Ionotropic and metabotropic glutamate receptors. Concentration of glutamate in the nervous system is much higher than in other tissues. Glutamate receptors play an important role in synaptic transmission, neural plasticity and n...

متن کاملP176: Neurological Diseases: Causes, Symptoms and Treatments
The nervous system is an extremely complex communication system that can send and receive large amounts of information simultaneously. The nervous system has two distinct parts: the central nervous system (the brain and the spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (the nerves located outside the brain and spinal cord). The main unit of the nervous system is neural cells (neurons). The rou...
متن کاملP113: Inflammation and its Role in Neurological Diseases with an Emphasis on MS
Inflammation is an important factor in the pathophysiology of neurological diseases and the physiological response of the immune system against internal and external harmful stimuli. Inflammation is the natural response of the body to damage, which leads to the removal of debris from dead cells and infections from damage and tissue repair. In this study, neuropathic inflammation and its role in...
